A time of growth and re-evaluation

Posted on 24 February 2016

When we first started Tier Gear a little over 2 years ago, we predominantly did so to help local hammock hangers and those who like to make their own gear access local materials at reasonable prices. There was no real business plan, just a hint of what may be possible, the knowledge of a clear gap in the market, and some unbridled enthusiasm to make it happen and be open to wherever it may lead us.

Over time Tier Gear has grown steadily, forming solid relationships with local and overseas suppliers of high quality ultralight gear, lightweight hammock equipment and suppliers of fabrics, hardware and rope, most of which you cannot access anywhere else in Australia. Supplying these unique products to the Australian market is what is at the core of Tier Gears business - we have never liked being just like everyone else. A natural progression saw us begin manufacturing our own lightweight equipment including camping hammocks, quilts, and tarps, with more products to come in 2016.

Of course none of this would have been possible without the enthusiastic support of the Australian outdoor community. Unfortunately for our customers, this increased demand for our products and services has now led us to the point where we will likely need to register for GST in the very near future, which means an increase in our prices across the board of up to 10%. We have a meeting with our accountant tomorrow, and a decision will be made after that. If you want to get in before the inevitable get in now though.

We will continue to strive to keep prices as reasonable as possible by keeping our overheads low, streamlining our processes, continually seeking innovative products at the best possible price, buying in larger volumes, and offsetting any price increases with a continued focus on customer service and supplying products of the highest quality.

We have certainly learned a lot since we started, and still have much to learn but we are enjoying the challenge of raising a young family with running our own business. Tier Gear will certainly change dramatically once both our kids are at school next year. This next period of growth for Tier Gear will see us continue to learn and move forward with an increased range of quality products to make or modify your own gear, more products to lighten your load and more products made right here in Tasmania, Australia.

Thanks for your support and as always if there are any questions please send us an email or give us a call.

Kind regards

Simon, Sarah and our two little helpers.
